Above the Blue Sky, the Moon

Piece description from the artist

The deep dark long, icy cold winter nights are in this painting, coupled with the brilliant stars and moonlight. It also has in it the loss and love, and is a mystery to even my own self. The painting not yet painted will come even closer to what I am after. I can never quite 'get there.' Thus, a life time spent of searching. A few days ago I had two moons, one at 6:30 am and the other at sunset, but that is the painting yet to come. It is time to let this painting go now, and research a new image all over again. I am at my best when painting is at it's most pleasurable, not trying to resolve.

About Lorna Ritz

Amherst, MA

Lorna Ritz studied under the instruction of painter James Gahagan, (a student of Hans Hofmann), who was a very important teacher for her in the 60’s. She received an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1971, in both painting and sculpture, (welding steel, and casting in bronze and iron). She welded steel for 25 years, but never stopped painting, and only paints now. It is color and paint that structures the space that then finds the volumetric composition of her painting.
