Piece description from the artist
When it rains on the Santa Monica mountains all the seeds that have laid dormant for months sprout. Within days the golden brown hills are covered in new growth, wild flowers and green grass. This transformation is one of the most significant markers of seasonal change in Topanga Canyon. It marks the time of spring by beckoning people outside to hike and enjoy the outdoors. I can spend hours on the open trails observing the new plant growth and admiring the transformation of the canyon.
Natalia Evans is a California based artist, illustrator and teacher.
She studied art at UCSC and graduated with a Liberal Arts Degree in 2003. Her love for art lead her to develop after school art programs for youth centers in Santa Cruz and Alaska. In 2012 Natalia opened her own studio in Topanga Canyon. She teaches art to children and adults year round. Natalia’s passion for art is fueled by teaching others to discover their creative voice.
Natalia approaches her own work the same as she approaches meditation. When she enters a painting her intention is to be in a clear, positive space. She believes paintings are a reflection of one’s inner state. Each piece begins with a “map”. She draws a series of lines on the blank canvas and defines a range of colors to work with. After this point she allows the piece to create itself. Nature and its endless cycles, are the main sources of inspiration behind her work.
