Piece description from the artist
I've always loved Matisse, and I was fascinated to learn this his father worked in Belgian carpet mills, since my father worked in a mill that made linoleum reproductions of Belgian carpets. When I placed this bouquet on the oilcloth that tops the dining table on the screen porch of our summer cottage in Sedgwick, Maine, I was immediately transported back to the floral patterns of my father's "carpets."
Leslie Anderson lives and paints in Maine. In the summer, she and her husband live downeast on a flower farm in Sedgwick, where she paints the landscape of the Blue Hill Peninsula and Deer Isle in oils and watercolors. In the winter, she works in her Portland studio, depicting half-remembered images from her days of summer painting and exploring the internal landscape of still life. Whether out-of-doors or in her studio, her artistic concerns are the same: juxtaposing light against dark, invoking pattern and repetition, and layering sumptuous, harmonious color. Her work in included in corporate and private collections around the world.
