Cracked Earth Number 29

Piece description from the artist

Having been born with vision in only one eye, I have always seen the world through a monocular lens. Although limiting, this more narrow window has made me hyper aware of fine details and imperfections. Oftentimes, it’s the uniqueness of the imperfections that interests me the most as I have a deep understanding of how my own visual “imperfection” has led me to see the world in unique ways. It has given me a deep appreciation for experiencing our world not only visually but also tacitly. As a result, I create artworks that are densely layered and richly textured.

This work is from my Cracked Earth series of textural mixed media paintings. My painting's cracked and fissured surfaces represent the damage being done to our planet. The contrast of smooth and cracked surfaces remind me of natural formations on the surface of parched dried up riverbeds. The cracks and fissures in the earth's surface are like an intricate work of art. My work is meant to be a reminder of nature’s beauty, even in the face of destruction.
