Piece description from the artist
The title Deluge refers to a small group of drawings that Leonardo DaVinci made towards the end of his life that show giant storms that barrel over the landscape, snapping trees, throwing debris and decimating everything. I was so intrigued by the these drawings (in light of climate change) that I took up the theme and began a series of works based on the idea of a deluge. When I see the destructive power of nature, I still see the beauty in it all – the mathematics, the colors, the movement and gestures – all while destroying what man has made.
These early Deluge works were all made on paper using a combination of materials – often employing spray paints and templates on paper.
After graduating from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 1993, Craig Stover began his artistic career as a studio assistant for the internationally renown artist Sam Maitin. He also began showing his works in a variety of galleries both locally and nationally. Aside from his studio practices, he also worked for a number of arts organizations which ultimately led him to be the Executive Director of Allens Lane Art Center. This was highlighted by a cover story in Art Matters (Mar. 2008) about him being a fine artist who ran his own arts organization. Mr. Stover continued to exhibit his works in a number of solo exhibitions while running the center which culminated in a solo print exhibition at the Williams Gallery. At the beginning of the pandemic, he began his most successful series of works titled Sentinels which were large abstracted warrior figures that became his signature style.
