Piece description from the artist
Fisher Pond is a small but significant body of fresh water on Vashon Island, Washington. The surrounding forest is home to many species and the pond itself supports many birds and mammals. This image was taken on a cold December morning when a rare sheet of ice covered the pond and reflected the sky and surroundings in a unique way.
Kirk Beeler has been doing landscape photography for more than twenty-five years. From Vashon Island in Washington, his home since 1988, photography and fly-fishing have taken him throughout the Pacific Northwest and the world.
Kirk was raised in a small town in Eastern Washington located near the Cascade Mountains. The many summers he spent high in these mountains left him with an appreciation and wonder of the natural world that he felt nothing could capture; that is, until he discovered the camera. The desire to bring these places home led directly to an interest in photography.
Kirk shoots primarily medium-format transparency film, as he believes this medium still creates the highest quality photographic images. He uses two Fuji medium-format cameras because of their heavy duty construction and sharp, high quality lenses. For broader landscapes, he uses a Nobelx 150, a German rotating lens camera that delivers true panoramic images.
