Flatiron 07

Piece description from the artist

The Flatiron Building is a triangular 22-story landmark in Manhattan that is situated just south of Madison Square Park. Although the immediate area surrounding the tower is called the Flatiron District, it blends into the border of the Chelsea neighborhood. Completed in 1902 and designed by Chicago architect Daniel Burnham, it is considered one of the world's most iconic skyscrapers, and is most definitely an icon of New York City.

The steel-framed building is clad in terracotta in the Renaissance Revival style of the Beaux-Arts and rises just over 300ft in the air. The notorious Chicago School of architecture is the primary design focus. Originally it was to be called the Fuller Building, and once complete the Fuller Company took the 19th floor as its headquarters. The citizens gave it the nickname "Flatiron" due the triangular shape, the shape of a cast iron clothes iron at the time. At the time of completion, it was regarded by critics as "a monstrosity" and "unfit to be in the center of the city".

It has been featured in numerous TV & film productions such as Friends, Spin City, Veronica's Closet, Spider-Man, and Godzilla.

About Ashland Thomas

Chicago, IL

Ashland grew up in Southeast Virginia surrounded by lush rural landscapes, great protected swamp lands, national & state parks, the Chesapeake Bay, the Eastern Shore, the breathtaking Skyline Drive & Blue Ridge Mountains, and the inlets & oceans of Virginia & North Carolina.

It was this constant variation in natural beauty that first drew his eye to the camera; that, and the constant joy of capturing life's candid moments on film. Although no particular subject is banned from the lens of Ashland's camera, it is landscapes, cityscapes, wildlife, and nature that truly captures his heart.

"There's always more to see, more to learn, more to be wowed about-I just hope you enjoy what I see in the world."

A constant staple on the likes of Instagram, Flickr, and Facebook, Ashland currently resides in Chicago, Illinois, and looks forward to many more years of development, collaboration, creativity, world travel, and art.
