Hot Garbage

Piece description from the artist

So what does one paint after a recent group gallery show where not a single painting of more than 120 works on display sold? I had done a rough drawing of a potential new painting called, "Falling Objects" where random objects were falling from the sky and splashing into a lake below. But when I got to drawing the sketch out onto canvas, I realized the enormity of my task as there were more than 30 objects that I would need to paint. I looked at the objects and then it hit me – I should do several of them by themselves, in a pop art setting. So the first one I chose was a garbage can, which somehow seemed fitting as my take on what sells and what doesn't. One man's trash is another man's treasure. The size of this painting and the neon pink background makes this one pop – and definitely qualifies it as a pop art painting!

About Tom Blood

St. Louis, MO

Tom Blood is a self-taught, modern-day surrealist, heavily influenced by his all-time favourite artist, Rene Magritte. Some of his early works include two crowd favorites – "Bobby Hull" which was created using a palette knife and "The Three Stooges" which was created using three primary colors. Since that time, Tom has pursued a more surrealistic path. He paints ideas. His goal is to paint the impossible, or at least, the highly improbable. With his paintings, viewers can always tell what's going on, not necessarily knowing why. He wants his paintings to tell stories that make people think, or bring a smile. His work has won numerous awards locally and he has had a number of solo shows in the St. Louis, Missouri area where he was born and raised.
