Piece description from the artist
Lava King is, as is my usual custom, a totally unplanned work of complete fantasy. I pour paint of various colors with rigorous abandon, let it dry, and then look at it ~ sometimes for days on end. The shape of the paint usually guides me to its final destiny (and title) when I begin to tighten down, in this case: recognizing a face, even with it oddball Cyrano-type nose, and the coloration suggested warm, flowing something ~ yes! lava. It's at once African and Hawaiian. Indeed, it is what YOU, the viewer, make of it.
Richard Green holds a Bachelor's degree in music and art history from the University of Minnesota, and a commercial art certificate from The Hennepin County Technical College. The 35mm camera he received for his seventh birthday was probably the catalyst which would eventually lead to a career in art direction and graphic design. He is a self-taught watercolor artist and oftentimes combines a variety of mediums, including a computer to achieve the effects he desires.
