Lime Butterfly I

Piece description from the artist

Utilizing the live, Rorschachian symmetry of an in-camera, digital "reflection" effect and pareidolia (the psychological phenomenon that allows one to see faces and familiar shapes where they do not exist), Jim sets out on journeys to search for and capture the familiar within the mundane. At the intersections of gastronomy and geometry, still-life and biology, sensual and grotesque, Jim's mind's eye expeditions have produced demons, angels, parasites, masks, mysterious patterns, and otherworldly artifacts, flora and fauna. Yet, each image is an opportunity for the viewer to see something different in what is presented.

About Jim Baab

Somerville, MA

Somerville, MA artist Jim Baab photographs everyday objects, scenes, and the human form, with an eye for light, line, and illusion. His figurative, food, and Instagram images have been published and chosen for national and international group exhibitions in the US and Europe; and, three illusions that he created during "Human Landscape" photography workshops taught by Karin Rosenthal secured Jim a 'Gold Artist' award from ArtAscent, an art and literature magazine.

Some of his experimental photography utilizes an in-camera "reflection" effect to trigger pareidolia, the tendency to interpret a vague stimulus as something known to the observer, such as seeing shapes in clouds or faces in inanimate objects or abstract patterns. It's like working with a live, handheld, Rorschach Test inkblot!
