Piece description from the artist
Pacific Wheel | Pacific Park at Santa Monica Pier
The Pacific Wheel at Pacific Park is the world's first and only solar powered Ferris wheel and it opened with the development of this entertainment district in 1996. It is the only amusement park on the West Coast of the United States to be located on a pier and is LA's only admission-free park. Pacific Park features 12 rides, midway games, shops, and multiple food vendors and restaurants. The original Santa Monica Pier, developed multiple times over the years, opened in September of 1909 as Municipal Pier mainly as a conduit for sewage. The City of Santa Monica acquired the then privately owned property in 1974 and it was almost completely destroyed by storms in the 1980's. By 1989 the city approved a plan to develop the property into a 2-acre family commercial district reminiscent of its heyday in the 20's & 30's.
Ashland grew up in Southeast Virginia surrounded by lush rural landscapes, great protected swamp lands, national & state parks, the Chesapeake Bay, the Eastern Shore, the breathtaking Skyline Drive & Blue Ridge Mountains, and the inlets & oceans of Virginia & North Carolina.
It was this constant variation in natural beauty that first drew his eye to the camera; that, and the constant joy of capturing life's candid moments on film. Although no particular subject is banned from the lens of Ashland's camera, it is landscapes, cityscapes, wildlife, and nature that truly captures his heart.
"There's always more to see, more to learn, more to be wowed about-I just hope you enjoy what I see in the world."
A constant staple on the likes of Instagram, Flickr, and Facebook, Ashland currently resides in Chicago, Illinois, and looks forward to many more years of development, collaboration, creativity, world travel, and art.
