Piece description from the artist
This embroidered painting is part of a series I created after a year of Covid lockdowns and restrictions. I kept envisioning doorways and passageways as I desired to travel, to reunite with family and to explore again. The archways and openings made their way into these pieces in the form of abstract arches and open ended shapes.
Emily Keating Snyder a Los Angeles-based fine artist focusing on abstract painting incorporating the tradition of embroidery. Her minimalist, textural paintings seek to bring craft into the context of fine art by literally stitching thread through artist’s canvas, presenting what is traditionally a women’s medium in the context of historically-masculine painting. Her pieces create a balance between rigidity and looseness, as spontaneous brushstrokes and raw canvas interact with intentional embroidered lines. Color is always a driving inspiration in her mixed-media work. Emily graduated from NYU in 2009 and her work has been featured by Real Simple, Emily Henderson, Clever, SF Girl By Bay, designlovefest and Parachute Home.
