Mercer-Williams House

Piece description from the artist

The Mercer-Williams House in Savannah Georgia is known by many from the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

The house has had many owners, including a local Shriners Temple. The name of the house comes from two Savannah residents. Hugh Mercer started the construction which was interrupted during the Civil War. Mercer served as a general and is the great-grandfather of Capitol Records co-founder Johnny Mercer.

Jim Williams, was an antiques dealer and preservationist who had a large part in maintaining the historic district of Savannah.

Williams is the main character portrayed in the book that became a well known movie that recounts a 1981 shooting that occurred in the home and the subsequent murder trial.

Some believe the house is haunted due to the murder trial and an earlier accident where a boy lost his life after a fall from the three story home. Ghost tours explore the haunted history.

The home is now a museum that includes antiques collected by Jim Williams.
