Piece description from the artist
Quadracci Pavilion – Milwaukee Art Museum
Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the iconic Quadricci Pavilion opened in 2001 and earned the 2004 Outstanding Structure Award from the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering. Seen in this image is the brise soleil, which opens and closes to expose or protect the building based on sunlight and weather conditions, and has a wingspan of 217 feet.
Milwaukee is the most populous city in the state of Wisconsin and the second largest city along Lake Michigan behind Chicago. Incorporated in 1846, it is one of the most diverse cities in the United States, and was heavily influenced by German culture, architecture, and trades, which turned the city into a brewing capital. "Cream City" is a nickname that comes from the cream colored brick that became a staple in construction in this region during the 19th century. Many of those buildings are still visible today.
Ashland grew up in Southeast Virginia surrounded by lush rural landscapes, great protected swamp lands, national & state parks, the Chesapeake Bay, the Eastern Shore, the breathtaking Skyline Drive & Blue Ridge Mountains, and the inlets & oceans of Virginia & North Carolina.
It was this constant variation in natural beauty that first drew his eye to the camera; that, and the constant joy of capturing life's candid moments on film. Although no particular subject is banned from the lens of Ashland's camera, it is landscapes, cityscapes, wildlife, and nature that truly captures his heart.
"There's always more to see, more to learn, more to be wowed about-I just hope you enjoy what I see in the world."
A constant staple on the likes of Instagram, Flickr, and Facebook, Ashland currently resides in Chicago, Illinois, and looks forward to many more years of development, collaboration, creativity, world travel, and art.
