Piece description from the artist
This painting was inspired by the Lower East Side of New York City. I wanted to capture the movement, the rhythm, and the dynamic nature that’s so characteristic of the city. There’s a constant sense of motion there—people, traffic, light—and I tried to channel that energy into the piece.
I worked with watercolors, applying them as loosely as possible to allow the medium to speak and move freely. That looseness helped me reflect the city’s chaotic beauty while still keeping the forms and perspective grounded. It was a balance between control and spontaneity, structure and flow.
This piece aligns closely with my broader practice, which often revolves around capturing a sense of place through mood and movement. I usually work with a limited color palette and let strategically placed bursts of color lead the eye or disrupt the quiet—this piece follows that rhythm while exploring a particularly vibrant and kinetic location.
It’s a love letter to the city, but also a personal reminder of how spaces can shape emotion. There’s a pulse to this piece that mirrors the way NYC makes me feel—energized, alert, slightly disoriented, but always inspired.
Look at it like you would the city itself—don’t try to pin it down too fast. Let your eye wander, get a little lost in it, and see where it takes you.
