Recovering Redwoods

Piece description from the artist

In 2020, a large fire burned almost 90,000 acres across the Santa Cruz Mountains in California. This fire burned through large areas of redwood trees scorching the canopy and the ground severely damaging the ecosystems. Big Basin State Park, California's first state park, was hit especially hard. However, these forests are incredibly resilient and have started to come back. It will take many years to return to what we remember it being. After spending the last 3 years watching and photographing these places, I have come to this conclusion: The forests were not destroyed, they were reborn. This image shows the redwoods sprouting along there tall trunks as well as the understory coming back enthusiastically in the open sunshine.

About Ian Bornarth

Fremont, CA

Traveling with a camera allows me to record the world as I see and experience it. Since our world is constantly changing, photography helps me bring a piece of it home to share. Every trip inspires the next adventures and it doesn't matter if I travel across countries or to the next county, new experiences seem to wait around every corner. My images reflect my experiences and I am happy to share them.

I have been fortunate enough to have traveled though much of Europe and North America experiencing the beauty and grandeur of so many natural and human places. An education in photography including a master’s degree has allowed me to teach and share my knowledge for almost 20 years.
