Piece description from the artist
Mexican candle holder with red candles, glass bowl and colored tissue paper.
Douglas Newton has been painting seriously for about thirty years and has been painting full time for almost ten. Before that, Douglas had a career as an advertising art director.
At first, Douglas worked in a "suburban surrealism" mode, painting American landscapes of houses and gardens, mostly from his imagination. At the same time, Douglas began painting still lives of food, toys and household objects, when the still lives gradually became his primary interest.
Douglas works directly from life, forgoing the use of photography as a reference. His main focus is on capturing the effects of light on form, texture and color. Douglas is not as concerned with photorealism as with making beautiful, rich and sensuous paintings.
