Piece description from the artist
Seagulls fly gracefully through an arched stone window, revealing a vibrant seascape with a clear blue sky. The contrast between the shadowed interior and the bright, open ocean creates a dramatic effect. Your eyes literally go on a journey with this one, heading out to sea. As to why the birds are flying through this archway? That remains a mystery. I call this "Rite of Passage" as we all have to eventually head out on our own, off into the brave unknown. The archway symbolizes a passage from the known to the unknown, framed in realism but pointing towards a surreal and boundless horizon where the seagulls soar. The contrast between the sturdy, dark stonework and the bright, liberating sky invites viewers to contemplate their own journeys. It's designed to evoke feelings of anticipation and excitement, perfect for energizing any space with a touch of adventurous spirit.
Tom Blood is a self-taught, modern-day surrealist, heavily influenced by his all-time favourite artist, Rene Magritte. Some of his early works include two crowd favorites – "Bobby Hull" which was created using a palette knife and "The Three Stooges" which was created using three primary colors. Since that time, Tom has pursued a more surrealistic path. He paints ideas. His goal is to paint the impossible, or at least, the highly improbable. With his paintings, viewers can always tell what's going on, not necessarily knowing why. He wants his paintings to tell stories that make people think, or bring a smile. His work has won numerous awards locally and he has had a number of solo shows in the St. Louis, Missouri area where he was born and raised.
