St. Jean à la Nuit

Piece description from the artist

About "St. Jean à la Nuit" | St. Jean and Gustavia are St. Barth's most well-known and well-traveled areas. They are often bustling, especially in high season, and I wanted to show that energy while still reflecting the rest of the island's serene nature. Here we see the iconic Eden Rock jutting out into the bay as boats sway nearby and the traffic passes quickly along the main roadways. Then, in the foreground and distance you see fewer lights and activity; you see the topography, hints of the flora, and the unspoken quiet the permeates as you step away from the main neighborhoods.

I decided to take a two month sabbatical in order to reconnect with my photographic roots. I rented the cheapest house on the island with the richest experience: I got to live next door to locals, learned about some hidden spots on the island, picked up some local dialect, and even discovered a new plant with holistic healing properties. I also rediscovered some slumbering techniques and styles that I quickly re-embraced. What resulted is a body of artwork of which I am very proud.

About Deborah Liljegren

Peekskill, NY

Deb grew up with cameras, films, and other photography accouterments being as normal to her as baseballs or dolls were to other kids. She learned to take what was there, what was real — the light, the dark, the mood, the balance, the air — and translate it through the lens. Having a deep affinity for water, she merged these two passions and began creating underwater work. In the water, everything that we know goes away — noise, gravity, perceptions — there is tremendous peace and it allows Deb to create visual enigmas that calm rather than confuse.

Even with this devout love of photography, Deb had always worked in other media, forging more than just images, rather pieces that seem to morph. That which we actually see is an interpretation — the viewer’s — and that changes with each person, lighting, environment, and more.
