Stallion

Piece description from the artist

I layered squares and rectangles of handmade papers with Gesso to the canvas's surface to create a textured, grid-like pattern to begin this painting. Then, once this layer dried, I drew in the bold, foreshortened shape of a horse and kept in mind that my goal was to integrate the horse's form with the pattern I created with the layer of papers. I added my colors and used white highlights to suggest light and deep blues for the shadows while maintaining a visually balanced composition. The contrasting colors and collage of textures helped me to achieve the three-dimensional effect for this statement piece.
