Stillness and Change

Piece description from the artist

Like waves caught still, the dunes of Great Sand Dunes National Park rise and fall. Throughout the day the color of the sand shifts and changes. At dawn, the dunes glow golden. By noon, they are bleach bright white. Once afternoon approaches, shadows stretch long and the sands turn a deep amber. Here, at twilight, the sand glows with a soft, lavender light.

I wanted this photo to capture the simple beauty of the ever-changing dunes when the last light of the day paints them in this particular, spectacular color. Were I a painter, would I have been bold enough to choose such an almost unbelievable shade? Nature did.

This photograph is called “Stillness and Change.” These mountains of sand stand still in the moment, yet constantly shift in color and texture as hours and days process.

About Scott Wurzel

Arlington, VA

Currently located in Washington, DC, Scott is a native Floridian photographer specializing in landscape photography. His work explores the interplay of light and dark — rejecting the notion that photography is just “painting with light.” He seeks what resides in the contrast — the liminal spaces of the world.

Scott has shot in some of the most beautiful locations in the world, including Iceland and locations throughout the Old World. But some of his most inspiring locations are right at home in America's enchanting National Parks.
