There Is a Land I Can See

Piece description from the artist

In this painting, I'm exploring the idea that we all have our own personal oasis, a place of calm in the midst of life's harsh landscapes. The rich, warm reds of the cliffs contrast sharply with the cool blue of the water, creating a sense of shelter and respite.

I've built up the colors using layers of oil glazes, letting the warmth of the earth tones seep into each other. The sky fades from a pale blue to a warm yellow, suggesting a time of day when the light softens everything it touches.

The water nestled between the cliffs isn't just a physical feature – it's a metaphor. It's that internal space we all have, where we can find peace and reflection. The way the cliffs embrace the water, it's like they're protecting something precious.

There's a simplicity to the forms here, but also a depth to the colors. I wanted to capture that feeling of discovering a hidden oasis, a secret spot that feels like it was made just for you.

This piece is about finding your own source of renewal, your own body of water in the landscape of your life. It's an invitation to pause and reflect on where you find your moments of peace and clarity.

About Winston Chmielinski

Quincy, MA

Winston Chmielinski (b. 1988 in Boston, MA) engages with painting through organic dissolutions and reconstitutions of the figure. Forms forego their contours, suspending Chmielinski's paintings out of narration and into insistence—of paint, of presence, and of perception.

Following a decade of critically acclaimed solo presentations in EU and US, inclusion in the 2013+2017 Venice Biennales, and spotlights at VOLTA NY, The Armory Show NY, Liste, and Positions Berlin, Winston now helms a creative studio in Berlin and is preparing a new body of work, to be released in 2023.
