Tortuga Pirata

Piece description from the artist

"Tortuga Pirata" is a densely work abstract painting in the realm of red yellow blue green coloring, concentrated in the atmosphere of deep space.

Recently viewing the works of Jackie Saccoccio's Femme Brut, my paintings are changing, including randomness, density, and explosive mark making as dominant features. Certainly Hans Hoffmann's canvases come to mind.

The work is bold, original, engaging, dramatic, high key in color, providing quiet tranquility and opposing chaos in its essence.

Artist's Statement:

Painting and drawing are Richard's passions. Landscape architecture is his profession. Richard paints large abstract canvases plein-air in the open air by the ocean. He paints large-scale portrait and figure paintings in the studio. Landscape paintings are produced in the field in all weather conditions.

Richard's paintings and drawings are about nature, man’s relationship to nature, man’s nature and the nature of painting and drawing. Through color, line, and form, Richard searches for beauty and meaning in the universe.

Some works are inspired by natural elements – sea, wind, night stars, and aerial views of earth appearing from space. Some are drawn from infinite places located within the sub conscious.

Richard's abstract canvases contain movement, energy, slash, spatter, thrust, space, primary colors, memories, hopes, ocean currents, the milky way, serenity, angst, coolness of water, maps of places, storms, moons, and geometry.

His paintings are as solid as concrete with colors that are dense, impenetrable, rich, modeled, and thick with texture. Through painting and meditation, Richard can begin to see clearly.

Richard is obsessed with the art works of DaVinci, Picasso, and DeKooning. The artists he studies, the authors he reads and the musicians he listens to influence his work. Richard reads the novels of Tolstoy, Thomas Hardy, and John Steinbeck and listens to the music of Beethoven, Bob Dylan, and The Rolling Stones.
