Piece description from the artist
Some people wonder where I get my ideas. I got the idea for this painting while out on a winter walk in our neighborhood. I was looking at all of the bare trees – nothing but branches – and I imagined how much prettier they would look if they were topped off by roses. I did a little investigating and found there is no such thing as a tree of red roses. Perfect. Since we're in the midst of winter, I decided to put the tree on a snow covered hill with a simple blue sky to make the roses pop. My mother always loved roses and she used to tell me, "Someday, you're going to be an artist." This painting is dedicated to her. It's a simple painting with not much going on. But the more than 250 roses on the tree each had to be individually painted. I hope you like it!
Tom Blood is a self-taught, modern-day surrealist, heavily influenced by his all-time favourite artist, Rene Magritte. Some of his early works include two crowd favorites – "Bobby Hull" which was created using a palette knife and "The Three Stooges" which was created using three primary colors. Since that time, Tom has pursued a more surrealistic path. He paints ideas. His goal is to paint the impossible, or at least, the highly improbable. With his paintings, viewers can always tell what's going on, not necessarily knowing why. He wants his paintings to tell stories that make people think, or bring a smile. His work has won numerous awards locally and he has had a number of solo shows in the St. Louis, Missouri area where he was born and raised.
