Piece description from the artist
A woman in a floppy hat and orange dress stands alone on an island that is filled with tulips. She's staring at a green horizon off in the distance. The visual makes one wonder, "How did she get there? How will she get back? And what's an island of tulips doing in the middle of an ocean?"
My initial thought on creating this was to create something bright and spring-like. So I knew I wanted flowers in it. But I decided to take the flowers out of their normal setting and instead, place them on a small island off an ocean shore. Initially, they were going to be roses, but my daughter suggested tulips and I decided I liked the additional colors and bright leaves of the flowers. I had a great time with both the clouds and the water and the entire color pallet is quite bright. It feels like Spring to me!
Tom Blood is a self-taught, modern-day surrealist, heavily influenced by his all-time favourite artist, Rene Magritte. Some of his early works include two crowd favorites – "Bobby Hull" which was created using a palette knife and "The Three Stooges" which was created using three primary colors. Since that time, Tom has pursued a more surrealistic path. He paints ideas. His goal is to paint the impossible, or at least, the highly improbable. With his paintings, viewers can always tell what's going on, not necessarily knowing why. He wants his paintings to tell stories that make people think, or bring a smile. His work has won numerous awards locally and he has had a number of solo shows in the St. Louis, Missouri area where he was born and raised.
