Piece description from the artist
Using the silhouettes of paper dolls takes the specificity away from the figures and makes them more symbolic and abstract. Action and interaction is suggested but not defined leaving interpretation open to the viewer. A sense of timelessness and memory is evoked by the painted atmosphere, which creates unusual, not realistic space, while the color provides another abstract influence.
Carolyn Oberst originally pursued a career in NYC as a clothing designer and formed her own company specializing in women’s wear. She discovered a love of painting while creating her own fabrics using a brush with paints and dyes. This discovery inspired her to close her successful business in order to concentrate on fine art. She then studied painting and drawing at the Art Student’s League of NY and at the New York Studio School before setting up her own painting studio.
Carolyn's work has been shown in one person, two person and group shows in various galleries and venues in NYC and beyond. She has had solo exhibitions at the Willoughby Sharpe Gallery in NYC, the Margaret Bodell Gallery in NYC, and M55 Art in LIC, NY. Recent exhibitions include a major two-person show at the Vit Gallery in Seoul, S. Korea (2011).
