Piece description from the artist
Sunset on Caesars Palace – Las Vegas – 1966.
Caesars Palace is steeped in mob history and was said to be "a mob-controlled casino from the day it opened its doors". The original lavish design from architect Joel Bergman takes its theme from Greco-Roman Hollywood and was brutalized by critics for being too gaudy. Over the years, Caesars Las Vegas has become the epitome of luxury in the forms of shopping, high-stakes gambling, and entertainment. The Forum at Caesars offers up 636,000 square feet of haute couture with brands like Cartier, Chanel, Dior, Gucci, Valentino, & Versace and is said to be the most valuable real estate in Las Vegas. It is the highest grossing mall in the United States with higher sales per square foot than Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Opening night entertainment was provided by Andy Williams, and many other international stars have graced the various stages at Caesars, including Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Sammy Davis, Jr., Liberace, Celine Dion, Cher, Elton John, Bette Midler, Gloria Estefan, Dolly Parton, Janet Jackson, and many more. Today the hotel provides 3,976 guest rooms.
Insider Info: Frank Sinatra once demanded the stakes be raised to $16,000 at which point he and the hotel executive Sanford Waterman got into an argument in which Sinatra threatened his lift which resulted in Waterman producing a revolver and pointing it at Sinatra demanding he leave. Sinatra retreated to Palm Springs, abandoning his Caesars contract.
Ashland grew up in Southeast Virginia surrounded by lush rural landscapes, great protected swamp lands, national & state parks, the Chesapeake Bay, the Eastern Shore, the breathtaking Skyline Drive & Blue Ridge Mountains, and the inlets & oceans of Virginia & North Carolina.
It was this constant variation in natural beauty that first drew his eye to the camera; that, and the constant joy of capturing life's candid moments on film. Although no particular subject is banned from the lens of Ashland's camera, it is landscapes, cityscapes, wildlife, and nature that truly captures his heart.
"There's always more to see, more to learn, more to be wowed about-I just hope you enjoy what I see in the world."
A constant staple on the likes of Instagram, Flickr, and Facebook, Ashland currently resides in Chicago, Illinois, and looks forward to many more years of development, collaboration, creativity, world travel, and art.
