Piece description from the artist
" I reworked the painting, in a trace-like state, after being logical for too long. Yesterday evening when I could hardly see color after my sunset walk I added color, from memory of where things were, paying attention to how my body moved the brush, changes I’d not have made had I been able to actually see the painting. I just may rework this painting for the rest of my life, the title retitled over and over again, but I’d rather start a new painting, like going to another country.
Lorna Ritz studied under the instruction of painter James Gahagan, (a student of Hans Hofmann), who was a very important teacher for her in the 60’s. She received an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1971, in both painting and sculpture, (welding steel, and casting in bronze and iron). She welded steel for 25 years, but never stopped painting, and only paints now. It is color and paint that structures the space that then finds the volumetric composition of her painting.
