Playground II

Piece description from the artist

Playground is from a series of drawings on paper that all dive into the idea that play, experimentation, imagination and risk are all valuable tools for artists to use in order to expand their art into new territories. Although the series is closely linked to another series of abstracted maps, in these works, the artist has freed himself from any original real world locations and has created a map of his imagination in which play of color, line, shape and movement are all used to create a dynamic and joyful image.

About Craig Stover

Philadelphia, PA

After graduating from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 1993, Craig Stover began his artistic career as a studio assistant for the internationally renown artist Sam Maitin. He also began showing his works in a variety of galleries both locally and nationally. Aside from his studio practices, he also worked for a number of arts organizations which ultimately led him to be the Executive Director of Allens Lane Art Center. This was highlighted by a cover story in Art Matters (Mar. 2008) about him being a fine artist who ran his own arts organization. Mr. Stover continued to exhibit his works in a number of solo exhibitions while running the center which culminated in a solo print exhibition at the Williams Gallery. At the beginning of the pandemic, he began his most successful series of works titled Sentinels which were large abstracted warrior figures that became his signature style.
