Through Time

Piece description from the artist

As the title "Through Time" suggests, my overall goal for this piece was to achieve a primitive yet contemporary quality. While this painting evolved, I kept in mind ancient cave paintings. I have only seen photos of these ancient depictions of horses and wildlife and still found them to be profoundly beautiful. I love how cave paintings record our relationship with horses beginning in the distant past.
After I decided on the concept of horses through time, I began this painting by applying several layers of textures with molding paste over the entire canvas. Then, I added many layers of colors ending with the white horse, which I formed with more molding paste. The white horse's black mane is a bold contrast to the soft Naples yellow and rusty red and orange background. I used washes of violets for the foreground to transition from the background.
